ORTHOPAEDIC DEPARTMENT

Staffed by Doctors and nurses at RIPAS Hospital and SSB Hospital KB.

Conditions managed include
- Acute problems: Seen in the Accident and Emergency. Conditions such as Fractures, Dislocations, Road Traffic Accidents, Tendon cut injuries, Joint infections, Burns, etc.
- Chronic problems: Seen in the Out patient Dept. Conditions such as Osteoarthritis knee and Hip, Chronic back pain, Ligament injuries, Deformities, Follow up of fractures seen earlier in A&E or discharged patients from ward, etc.

Orthopaedic procedures done in RIPAS Hospital include major surgeries such as Fracture fixations, Total knee and hip replacements, Arthroscopy and Ligament reconstruction, Deformity correction, amputations, tendon repair and reconstruction, skin graftings and numerous other minor surgeries. Also helps the Physicians or primary treating doctors in the management of Diabetic complications.

Outpatient Departments are run in Specialist Block on all working days except Wednesday afternoons. Burns clinic is run on Wednesday and Thursday mornings at the Burns unit.

OPD is a Referral clinic. Appointments are given if patient is referred by the A&E, peripheral clinics and hospitals, MRS, other depts or from the Wards. Patient registers in the clinic on arrival and awaits turn to be seen by doctor.

Procedures done in the clinic include Plastering, dressings of wounds, joint injections etc.
Plaster technicians help in the application of plaster. Dedicated staff nurses help in wound dressings. Patients may be admitted from clinic if requires more complex procedures. X-rays and blood investigations may be ordered. Patients may be referred to other depts in the hospital if required.

The Orthopaedic clinic runs in close cooperation with the Prosthetic Dept and the Podiatrist.

Doctors from the Orthopaedic Dept also conduct out patient clinics in Kuala Belait, Tutong and Temburong District Hospitals. There is also an active CDC Clinic which is run in Kiarong Clinic once a month where disabled children are seen for any orthopaedic problems.
